What do you sew when you have a plan to lose weight? A caftan pattern? A nightie? There are a few patterns to be considered.
This Chado Ralph Rucci pattern is a good fit for this project. With the right fabric selection we may even come up with something chic and easy to wear around the house (and scare the cat). A friend of mine also suggested wrap dresses, and this pattern would be a good match, if pockets are left out an alteration would be relatively easy.
Then there's the tent dress, I've always wanted to make one of these after seeing them in Vogue in the 90's. They can be worn loose or belted.

That first dress is very elegant but I have to say I have yet to see anyone wearing something like this in my area or near my work. I do like the idea of those tent dresses though - sort of super-loose a-line shapes - and otherwise I have found ponte di roma to be a great fabric for a dress that has to adjust to a varying weight... The other thing to think about too I guess is where you expect to lose weight. When my weight goes up and down it's mostly around my middle, so dresses that are fitted around the bodice and that flare out from a raised waistline still fit :)
LOL - I think the first one would be at home wear for me, or beach cover up depending on the fabric. Definitely something that fits through the shoulders and little elsewhere. I have been thinking about that Donna Karan dress you made awhile back, that might work.
This is something I am struggling with right now. At home I am currently living in self made pyjama bottoms. When the time comes to alter them, I will undo the waist stitching and then take in the outside seam, I figure I can do this a number of times and eventually I will have to shorten them in the crotch area. I know this isn't helpful for clothes to be worn in public. I like the wrap dress idea. I see one of those in my future.
We'll get through this together Elle.
I've just lost 6 lbs, and looking to lose another 14, so let's see if I hit on something that will work for you as well.
I think the wrap dress is a good idea. Good luck with your plan! Dresses that have some deliberate volume are probably a good bet, too.
I've just cut out the caftan, still have facings to do but we're almost there.
