Vogue 1247 - The tiny skirt expanded

This is one of the newest releases from Vogue, #1247, from Rachel Comey.   I liked the skirt but the pattern envelope did a good job of downplaying the tiny quality of this skirt (it is 17").  It calls for one yard of 60" fabric and even after adding 6" to the bottom of the skirt I used 38", so it's great if you only have a yard (and a bit) of bottom weight fabric.  This is rated as average,  the instructions use a hong kong finish on all of the seam allowances, for my wearable muslin, they are serged.

It comes together pretty quickly, in a day (without the hong kong finish), however I could have added 8" instead of the 6".  The original skirt calls for a 2" hem, and even after adding to the length I could only take 5/8".

I like how the skirt hangs, it isn't smooth across the pockets, partly because the darts on the yoke end almost at the top of the pocket edge, so it's a curve meeting a straight flat folded area.  I might try making the skirt again manipulating the pattern a bit and removing the dart on the yoke.  All in all an interesting skirt pattern.

Vogue 1247Here is the top from the same pattern if you want to see the entire outfit.

17 inches! Yikes! Your version with an extra half a foot looks good.

I think it's shorter than my tennis shorts... yikes!

Really cute skirt, to have the legs to wear it would be my first wish from the Genie in the bottle!

ELMO said...

You could probably carry it off well, women are notoriously self critical :)

you are too kind, therefore wish #2 and #3 are yours!

You're right. It is a very interesting skirt. Pockets not lying flat, reminds me of '50's skirts, where the pockets stand out at the hips.

This looks great on you! The pockets are so interesting.

Thanks everyone! I'll have fun sewing up another version soon.

The pockets are the really interesting portion of this skirt and where they are placed could be worn a variety of sizes. I like that you lengthened it...mmmm you are making me wonder if I could make one of these in my size! Great skirt btw!!!

I made a 16, and didn't have a problem with walking ease, go for it :)

I miss ordered the pattern in size 12. How does it fit? I always use size 14 for skirts. Any give? Great job. The top is a dream to make. I, too serged and did not use the hong kong seam.

Hi Constance! I would say the sizing is pretty exact. You might just want to add 1/4" to the seam allowances to the skirt pattern as you cut it out, and an inch to the waistband to get you to the 14.... and make any other changes you would normally make. I usually cut a 16 and taper a little out at the waist (I need a little more room at the waist as my normal adjustment). I forgot to do that with this pattern and it is snug at the waist but I can still wear it.

I made this skirt because I saw it here! I added five inches and then hemmed it using a wide self-bias strip. I also drafted a facing instead of a waistband, which I find much more comfortable. I may make another version this weekend. Thanks for posting it!

Your welcome Kristin, I like the facing idea, thanks for sharing.
