Handkerchief Quilt continued..... all is well I think...

It appears that out of the 24 striped pieces purchased, 8, 1/2 yard pieces were purchased, if very careful, there should be enough fabric to make the quilt as originally designed.  All of the 1/4 yard pieces needed to be cut in approximate halves and pattern matched.

First the selvage is cut, then you look for the pattern repeat (ideally as close to the center as possible), cut, and lay on top of the first layer.
It's not perfect, but it's the best solution for making due.

This way, we get 8 matched pairs of 9" pieces
Even though, this would have been much easier if they were all 1/2 yard pieces, this should work.

All of the strips are cut, and you can see the folded fabric loops which were the 1/2 yard lengths, the cut edge pairs are the 1/4 yard pieces that were pattern matched.

Now for sewing the strips together in preparation for the blocks

These were the first block samples, the instructions in the book will not be followed.  It produces a block that is fussy to assemble, and the resulting pattern matching along the chevron isn't ideal. The fabric is very soft and not stable, so at the slightest pull, and it stretches along the bias and distorts.

The large block on the lower right needs an inset square.... this will be the ultimate gusset training.  By the end of this quilt, I will be able to inset gussets in my sleep, more on that in the next post......
